Google hosts Life photo archive

The photographic archives of Life magazine, dating back to the 1750's,  are now available via Google Image Search.

This is an incredible resource presenting millions of fascinating photographs many of which have not been published previously.  Currently only 20% of the collection is online but this is being added to all the time.

Cat Cam

If, like me, you have ever owned a cat you will know that they are fascinating creatures who are prone to disappear for hours on end on little adventures.

What do they get up to when they are out of sight?

Over in Germany J. Perthold was pondering the same question and decided to create a Cat Cam to capture his cat Mr Lee's day. He modified a cheap digital camera so that it would automatically take a picture every few minutes and fixed it to the cat's collar in a protective housing.

The resulting photographic records of Mr Lee's trips are fascinating. A bit like "Life On Earth" but on a slightly smaller budget...

I love events like this and am going to try and contribute.

Its always interesting to see the photos that people post from all around the globe. Events like this seem to tap into a huge reservoir of talent.

Out Of Africa

During September and October 2006 German photographer Michael Poliza and his friend Stefan Breuer travelled from Hamburg to Cape Town on an 8 week helicopter expedition across Africa.

The photographs taken on this trip are stunning and the Daily Diary entries give a fascinating background.

Earth From Above

View our home planet from a different viewpoint with some simply stunning images.

The works of photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand, especially the aerial shots are always interesting, often stunning, and sometimes awe inspiring.

It is amazing how viewing things from a different angle can literally give you a new perspective on them.

Girl On A Motorcycle

When I was a younger man I used to meddle with photography.

At a photography exhibition in Glasgow (probably early 80's) I took, developed and printed this photograph (click on it for a larger version) of a young model. I was quite proud of it at the time as it turned out not too badly, reasonable composition, slight overexposure around the face but captured the texture of the leather jacket quite well.

Sadly my photography never really took off, being restricted to taking the odd family snap these days.

As for the young model, I wonder what happened to her?
